Diese Art (Mirounga Leonina) ist in der gesamten subantarktischen Region mit einer gesch\u00e4tzten Population von 700.000 Individuen verbreitet. Gegen Ende August beginnen die ersten M\u00e4nnchen anzukommen, markieren ihr Territorium und sammeln mit der Ankunft der Weibchen ihre Harems. Die schwangeren Frauen kommen als erste und geb\u00e4ren wenige Tage sp\u00e4ter. Die dominanten M\u00e4nnchen machen nur 14% der Bev\u00f6lkerung aus und k\u00f6nnen sich an einem Tag bis zu 15 Mal paaren.<br \/>\nWeitere \u00fcberraschende Daten sind, dass 73% der Geburten nachts stattfinden und die Sterblichkeitsrate der Nachkommen 4,4% betr\u00e4gt. Die M\u00e4nnchen wiegen 4 Tonnen, 8 mal mehr als ein Seel\u00f6we und die Weibchen 900 kg. M\u00fctter verlieren 13 kg pro Tag, w\u00e4hrend sie ihr Kind f\u00fcttern, was im gleichen Zeitraum zu einer Zunahme von 4 kg f\u00fchrt.
