But also like each species, it has particular characteristics, in its physiology and in its behavior. It has a varied life cycle, within the different seasons of the year. In December the males form harems of 2 to 12 females, in the breeding colonies. Between January and February, the young are born, one per female and 6 days after the birth the female enter heat.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_17457\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17457\" class=\"wp-image-17457 size-full\" title=\"Sea lions colony of Punta Loma Near Puerto Madryn\" src=\"https:\/\/ecohosteria.com.ar\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/sea-lions-madryn.jpg\" alt=\"Sea lions colony of Punta Loma \" width=\"700\" height=\"465\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ecohosteria.com.ar\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/sea-lions-madryn.jpg 700w, https:\/\/ecohosteria.com.ar\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/sea-lions-madryn-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ecohosteria.com.ar\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/sea-lions-madryn-100x66.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-17457\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sea lions colony of Punta Loma Near Puerto Madryn<\/p><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Between March and May, the puppies continue to lactate and those who came to reproduce at Punta Pir\u00e1mide or another reproductive colony, return to their respective annual colonies <strong>Punta Alt<\/strong>, <strong>Punta Loma<\/strong>, <strong>Punta Ameghino<\/strong> or <strong>Las Charas<\/strong> among others, within the Golfo Nuevo.<\/li>\n<li>From May to November, the females continue to nurse their young and do not form harems.<br \/>\nThey are good at holding their breath, these animals withstand high pressures, dives have been recorded <strong>490 ft<\/strong>\u00a0<em>( 150 m )<\/em> deep and can be around 7 minutes without breathing.<\/li>\n<li>From December to March the sea lions suitable for reproduction come together in reproduction colonies, young sea lions do not move from their stable colony.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_17487\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17487\" class=\"wp-image-17487 size-full\" title=\"Sea lion male alone in Punta Piramide colony\" src=\"https:\/\/ecohosteria.com.ar\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/sea-lions.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"444\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ecohosteria.com.ar\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/sea-lions.jpg 700w, https:\/\/ecohosteria.com.ar\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/sea-lions-300x190.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ecohosteria.com.ar\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/sea-lions-100x63.jpg 100w, https:\/\/ecohosteria.com.ar\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/sea-lions-600x380.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-17487\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sea lion male alone in Punta Piramide colony<\/p><\/div>\n<h4>Sea Lions in Weight and Size<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">The male weighs <strong>660 lb<\/strong>\u00a0<em>( 300 kg )<\/em> and the length is <strong>7.5 ft<\/strong>\u00a0<em>( 2.3 m )<\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">The female weighs <strong>220 lb<\/strong>\u00a0<em>( 100 kg )<\/em> and measures <strong>6 ft<\/strong>\u00a0<em>( 1.8 m )<\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">The calf weighs <strong>26.5 lb<\/strong>\u00a0<em>( 12 kg )<\/em> and measures <strong>2.6 ft<\/strong>\u00a0<em>( 80 cm )<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The weight is relatively low compared to the <a href=\"https:\/\/ecohosteria.com.ar\/en\/elephant-seals-in-peninsula-valdes-patagonia-wildlife\/\"><strong>seal elephant<\/strong><\/a>, the male weighs 8 times more than a male sea lion and is 2 times longer. The average life span of sea lions ranges between 15 and 18 years. They eat mainly fish, octopus, squid.
