Vers la fin du mois d&rsquo;ao\u00fbt, les premiers maux commencent \u00e0 arriver, marquant leur territoire et rassemblant leurs harems avec l&rsquo;arriv\u00e9e des femelles. Les femmes enceintes sont les premi\u00e8res \u00e0 arriver et accouchent quelques jours apr\u00e8s. Les m\u00e2les dominants ne repr\u00e9sentent que 14% de la population et peuvent s&rsquo;accoupler jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 15 fois en une journ\u00e9e.<br \/>\nUn autre fait surprenant est que 73% des naissances ont lieu la nuit et que le taux de mortalit\u00e9 de la prog\u00e9niture est de 4,4%. Les m\u00e2les p\u00e8sent 4 tonnes, 8 fois plus qu&rsquo;un lion de mer et les femelles 900 kg. Les m\u00e8res perdent 13 kg par jour en nourrissant leur enfant, ce qui augmente de 4 kg au cours de la m\u00eame p\u00e9riode.
